The state-of-the-art new Ayshire College building opened its doors in Kilmarnock last October. Situated on the former site of the historic Johnny Walker whisky distillery, the campus provides education to around 5000 full and part-time students in subjects ranging from engineering to hair and beauty.
The college turned to Brentwood as it wanted to create a reliable campus-wide communications network for staff. In particular, it wanted a system that reception staff could use to contact staff members when their visitors arrived at the front desk. The network needed to be mobile as staff members spent a lot of time moving around the large campus, so desk telephones would not really suit the purpose.
In addition, they wanted a network which could be used by security and maintenance teams. Again, it would need to be mobile with good coverage throughout the campus, to make sure staff could be coordinated effectively and to ensure any incident alerts were picked up and handled as quickly as possible.
Cross Campus Coordination
After carrying out a survey of the site, we recommended two handheld digital radio models, the Lugra Evolve E55 and the Motorola DP4800e.
The Evolve E55 is a standard digital two way radio we supplied for the majority of staff. It offered the perfect range of features for general staff who would be more likely to receive calls than make them, e.g. members of staff being contacted by reception to come and greet a visitor. Like most digital models, it benefits from advanced audio clarity and wide scale signal coverage..
The E55 also supports private calling, which means users can be contacted on a private line rather than via a cross network broadcast – ideal for relaying messages to individual colleagues. For maintenance staff, it also supports Lone Worker, so anyone working alone in a potentially hazardous situation, for example up a ladder, can be monitored.
The DP4800e is an advanced digital model ideal for coordinators and supervisors. As well as excellent audio quality and range, this display model comes jam packed with useful features ideal for a busy control hub relaying messages and managing operations across a large site.
For example, we programmed the DP4800e handsets for reception staff with radio check location tracking, so they could check to see if someone they were trying to contact had their radio switch on or off or if they were in the boundaries of the campus site. We also programmed DP4800s’s for security staff with a panic button, so they could raise an instant alarm in they found themselves in danger.
