Named after Christopher Marlowe, a contemporary of William Shakespeare who was a big influence on the famous Bard, the Marlowe Theatre has a reputation for being one of the UK’s leading regional theatres.
As well as a busy program of touring shows from major companies such as the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Marlowe is also a hotbed of up-and-coming talent, hosting productions of new plays by local writers – keeping the spirit of Marlowe alive.
The theatre’s management team contacted Brentwood to ask for two way radio support to help with their summer production schedule.
Theatre productions are extremely busy, high energy events involving lots of people in lots of different roles. The cast, stagehands, production management and front of house all have to work together in perfect harmony to make sure each show runs without a hitch. Coordinating light and sound with set changes, or turning around costume changes quickly enough, all requires excellent communication.
The Marlowe Theatre ended up hiring some of our Motorola CP040 analogue radios.
The CP040 is an older model which has since been replaced by the Motorola DP1400, but is a solid, reliable radio we still keep as part of our hire fleet.
While still in production, the CP040 was one of Motorola’s best-selling handsets. Like the DP1400, it is a simple-to-use non-display radio which is ideal for short-term hiring because even novice users have no problems operating it. It provides crisp, clear audio in all circumstances, with noise cancelling technology ensuring background interference is kept to a minimum.
Along with the CP040 handsets, we also supplied a Motorola DR3000 repeater unit with an antenna. As the theatre is quite a large building with multiple production areas, we wanted to ensure there was complete coverage all over.
We also supplied D-shape and 2-wire earpieces for all users. While a production is in progress, it is obviously important not to have noise from a two way radio speaker broadcasting loudly. Plugging in the earpieces means the main speaker is disengaged, allowing users to listen to communications without creating a disturbance.
