Brentwood makes obstacle race clearer than mud!

There’s plenty to do in the great outdoors. For some, this means a brisk walk with the dog, but for the thrill seekers among us, there are more wild and whacky options available…

From its farm in Kelvedon Hatch, Essex, the Nuclear Races team deliver (in their own words) “tough, gritty obstacle races over varied, undulating terrain, including man-made obstacles and awesome natural features”. As an outdoor sports provider, it also offers everything from aerial high ropes courses, quad biking and water zorbing to fishing, archery and paintballing.

Nuclear Races promises “fun and fitness” for all abilities and the star activity is the obstacle race. These highly organised events cover a range of formats and the course distances vary from five to 42 kilometres. Nuclear Races cannot afford to compromise on safety; nor does it. Fun and mud aside, there are safety precautions to consider, and keeping in touch with race participants at all times is essential.

At a recent obstacle race, Brentwood Communications was asked to provide two way radio equipment to help marshal the event. Mobile phone coverage cannot always be relied upon in remote places, making two way radio the only dependable option. Brentwood supplied Nuclear Races with 135 x Motorola DP3400 and DP4400 digital two way radios – enough for every race participant. As obstacle races cover a large area, so we also provided a Motorola DR3000 Repeater booster system. This included an antenna, which was erected on top of a pump-up mast (telescopic pole) to get it as far above the earth as possible, and then connected to the repeater on the ground to give the radios the best coverage of the site. The race marshals were equipped with Motorola remote speaker microphones and discreet d shape earpieces with in-line microphone and push-to-talk button.

These Motorola handsets have excellent range and a long battery life. They come with Intelligent Audio that adjusts automatically to compensate for background noise, making them ideal for boisterous obstacle races. The radios can be enhanced easily for other uses through a simple software upgrade that provides a range of additional key features. Both models have a Panic Button and the DP4400 model can have Man Down configured, which raises an alarm when it senses an abnormal vertical tilt or lack of movement for a predetermined length of time.

Motorola digital radios are waterproof and robust, making them ideal for use in the wet and muddy environment adventurists have come to love at Nuclear Races!
