Lakeland Trails organises a series of running and walking events set amidst the stunning scenery of the Lake District National Park. Their motto, ‘Inspiring Races in Beautiful Places’, really does capture what they are about – well marshalled, well routed races for all ages and abilities through some of the UK’s most spectacular countryside, with a fun-filled, carnival atmosphere.
Much of the success of the popular events stems from how well planned and organised they are. Keeping everyone safe and well, not to mention on the right path, is top priority. And with distances ranging from 5km all the way up to full marathon, and events taking place across the Cumbrian and Yorkshire uplands, maintaining good communication links is a big test.
Lakeland Trails operated an existing two way radio system, but were finding the distances involved, not to mention the rugged, mountainous terrain, were getting the better of the equipment. So they contacted Brentwood and asked for our advice.
Made for mobility
Having had a chance to look over some of the courses, we realised that however we solved the distance issues, the handsets we provided would have to be light and easily portable. Marshals and medical staff often had to walk the courses themselves, spending hours on end out in the hills making sure the race ran smoothly. A big, heavy, cumbersome handheld radio would not go down well.
We recommended the Hytera PD405 VHF, an all-purpose two way radio built for reliability and ease of use. Its slim design makes it convenient to carry and comfortable to hold, while it also boasts up to 16 hours of battery life – so no risks of running out of power, even on the longer races. It can operate on both analogue and digital frequencies.
The maximum range of the PD405 is 3km, which by itself would not be enough to cover all of the Lakeland Trail events. So we also supplied a Hytera RD985 repeater unit, with a mounted antenna, to boost the network coverage range to the required size. The repeater was programmed with a channel for general use, and then two further dedicated emergency channels, which would ensure there was always capacity on the system to raise the alarm if required.
Finally, as the system needed to operate across different race sites, we provided the radios on a Simple UK License, which allows use of the radios in different locations all over the UK.
