Gripvan hires out on location equipment and lighting gear – known in the industry as ‘grip’ – to top pro photographers working for glossy magazines, websites, and advertising and branding agencies.
The company’s unique offer is to supply a van preloaded with all the equipment needed for a professional photo shoot, along with a driver and technician to help set all of the gear up on site.
When bosses decided it was time to upgrade their two way radio fleet, they contacted Brentwood to discuss their requirements. Two way radios are used in the company’s warehouse, where equipment is stored ready to be loaded into a van.
Radio handsets are also taken by technicians off site when they are assisting with a shoot. Some clients use the van to travel between a number of different locations for different shoots, so the company needed radios on a standard license which would allow them to operate all over.
Gripvan already use a fleet of Motorola two way radios, the CP040, an older analogue model. They were keen to upgrade to a newer handset with better specifications and more features, but as the CP040’s are still operable, they did not think it was cost effective to replace the entire fleet at once.
We therefore recommended the Motorola DP1400, a hybrid model which can operate in analogue and digital modes. We initially set them up in analogue to pair with the existing CP040, and explained that when all of the older handsets are eventually phased out, it is easy to start running all of the DP1400s in digital mode.
The Motorola DP1400 offers all of the benefits of the latest digital two way radio technology. With excellent audio quality and a longer range than analogue radio, it also offers a range of digital features such as noise cancelling, automatic gain control to adjust volume in tune with background noise, private calling and voice activation (VOX).
Highly portable and durable, the DP1400 is perfect for use on the move and outside in all weather conditions. We supplied the handsets with D shape earpieces and soft leather carry cases with shoulder straps to help with carrying and using these portable two way radios.
The Motorola DP1400 has an impressive battery life, but as Gripvan’s technicians were potentially going to be using the radios on long journeys to and between different locations, we supplied spare battery packs as well. We also supplied six way chargers to make it easier to charge a number of handsets at once.
