PMS is the UK’s leading importer of consumer goods for the seasonal trade. It supplies everything from toys and Christmas decorations to gardening and camping equipment, buckets and spades to novelties for amusement arcades. Its range also covers houseware and electronic goods.
The company bases its wholesale and distribution operation at a massive 500,000 sq ft warehousing facility in Basildon, Essex, with 24,000 sq ft of showrooms attached. It also runs its own haulage fleet.
Brentwood first worked with PMS several years ago, installing an analogue two way radio network at the warehouse. Over the years, we have supplied more handsets several times.
But times change, operational demands shift as customers look for ever better service, and technology moves on. PMS found that the analogue radios were just not providing reliable enough coverage throughout the whole warehouse to keep operations running efficiently. So they got in touch with us again to find out what their options were.
Digital two way radio is far more widely available and much more affordable now than it was when we first worked with PMS. So having surveyed the premises again to make sure we understood the present operational requirements, we had no hesitation in recommending a digital upgrade.
With greater broadcast range, stronger signals and improved audio quality, we knew that digital two way radios would be able to solve the reliability issues PMS was facing with its older handsets.
However, so the company did not have to throw out its entire analogue fleet in one go, we recommended the Hytera PD405. The PD405 is known as a migration model because it can operate on both analogue and digital frequencies. Moreover, it can automatically detect the correct signal from any radio trying to talk to it, allowing it to switch freely between the two.
This meant PMS could still use its analogue radios as it gradually built up its digital fleet. Slimline and compact, the PD405 is easily carried and very straightforward to use, ideal in a busy warehouse environment where you don’t want additional equipment getting in the way.
It also comes with added digital features you cannot find on analogue models, such as supporting text messaging and VOX – a voice activation mode which means users can still operate the radio without pausing in their work.
