This Thameside facility has 86 storage tanks as well as 3 deepwater jetties for seagoing vessels.
Eliminating the risk for everyone on-site is a key priority for Vopak. That’s why they chose Brentwood Communications to provide robust, high performance radios (ATEX-rated) suitable for harsh and volatile environments. To protect the radios from the inevitable wear-and-tear, they wanted each radio housed in a strong leather case. In addition, they requested that we provide ATEX-rated Remote Speaker Microphones (‘Fist Mics’) along with the radios.
These hand-held radios are fully-featured, and deliver sharp reception from anywhere on-site. They are used by different departments including ‘Operations and Logistics’, ‘Security’, and ‘Talking to Offshore Ships’. Managers can communicate with the portable radios by means of a Desk-Based Radio Station in the office.
Following our free tests and trials carried out at the terminal, we supplied 45 Motorola DP4401 and 12 Motorola DP4801 (Ex-Series) digital radios. These rugged and durable radios boast the highest ATEX rating possible – which means workers can use them where there’s a high risk of explosion. To guarantee full coverage on this large industrial site, we decided to enhance the transmissions with a signal-boosting DR3000 Repeater. For this, we employed a Combiner with the Repeater so it could function perfectly from a single antenna.
As well as being reassured by the enhanced safety, workers can also use these tightly-sealed radios with confidence in all weathers. What’s more, the powerful battery can deliver improved talk-time (40% more than analogue), so that they can soldier on through punishing schedules without recharging.
Both the DP4401 and DP4801 are easy to operate – even when wearing gloves – as the PTT, Volume, Channel controls are large and chunky. To cause minimum distraction, the bright LED and the wide colour screen (on the DP4801) display ‘status information’ at a glance. Whenever employees are in trouble, they can quickly activate the orange Emergency button to call for assistance. Above all, these user-friendly radios require minimal staff training – saving the company time and money.
The industry-leading audio clarity on this radio enables users to communicate anywhere in the terminal. To prevent workers missing crucial calls, the intelligent audio self-adjusts the volume to compensate for any background noise. They can also make calls from the loudest areas because suppression filters dampen the deafening sound from delivery trucks, docking ships and industrial machinery. The radios’ elegant channel scanning function helps ensure calls are made and received first time, every time.
A voice announces channel and zone changes, plus the programmable button features. Workers can then remain focused on important tasks. To avoid interrupting vital procedures, managers can talk privately to set individuals, or dial up selected work groups from their Desk Base Station.
When a staff member works away from the group and feels vulnerable, they can derive comfort from the ‘Lone worker’ facility. This enhances personal safety by automatically sending an alarm if the worker fails to respond to preset audio prompts. Of course, they also have the ability to send for help by pressing their own Emergency button. In this case, colleagues with display radios are able to identify them immediately – and so act at once.
When hiring radios for use in populated areas, we can obtain a licence for the client from OFCOM – saving them the trouble. A licence permits radios to operate on an exclusive frequency, ensuring other people in the area cannot eavesdrop on private conversations.
