The Colourthon is a sponsored walk with a difference. Participants gather at the Chalkwell Park in the evening, before setting off on a 13 mile ramble along Southend seafront and the Westcliffs tops, before turning back through old Leigh Village and Leigh.
The twist is, walkers are encouraged to dress as brightly and colourfully as possible, so as the evening wears on, the whole event becomes a sea of moonlit colour. Hence the name, Colourthon!
Everybody taking part in the walk is encouraged to raise as much money in sponsorship as they can. And since 2012, the main Moonlight Walk has also been accompanied by a shorter Twilight Walk over 10km, encouraging littler and less energetic legs to take part too.
The event is renowned for its carnival atmosphere, and the money raised is used to help dozens of charities across Essex.
On the move
Organisers at the Southend Round Table approached Brentwood to supply two way radio support for this year’s event, held on Saturday 1st July. The main requirement was to make sure event marshals could keep in touch when out on the course to help support coordination and keep everybody safe.
To ensure there was communications support across the whole route, we supplied a Motorola DR3000 repeater unit with antenna to maximise signal coverage across the course.
Alongside this set-up we supplied a Motorola DM3400 base station. Part of the MOTOTRBO range, the DM3400 offers all of the benefits of advanced digital two way radio technology, including outstanding audio, high channel capacity and integrated data communications. The added bonus for an event like this is base station will always be mounted in the same place, no one can walk of with it. This makes sure communication is available, especially in an emergency situation.
For the handheld radios used by marshals and other event staff, we supplied a fleet of Motorola DP2400 handsets. Also part of the MOTOTRBO digital range, the DP2400 features Motorola’s latest advanced audio technology with intelligent volume control and noise cancellation. It includes private calling and was chosen to connect seamlessly with the DM3400 base station.
All users were issued with D-Shape earpieces, to further ensure calls could be heard clearly, especially out and about on the windy clifftops, but also to support hands-free use – especially useful when you are on the move.
