Brentwood had previously supplied analogue two way radios to the Basildon Mental Health Unit, which is based at Basildon University Hospital.
However, when management decided that the existing radios no longer quite fit with staff requirements, the South Essex Partnership Foundation, the trust which runs the unit, contacted Brentwood to explain the situation.
We immediately sent one of our engineers to the hospital to have a look at how two way radios were being used and what we could do to improve the way the fleet worked for staff on site.
We saw immediately what a fast-paced environment the unit is, and how demanding that could be for staff. Catering for patients with a full range of mental disorders, from dementia to people who had been admitted by order of court, the care provided is very much hands on around the clock.
Portable and Discreet
All staff were allocated a two way radio handset as part of safety protocols on the unit, to ensure they could gain assistance and raise alarms immediately whenever required.
The Vertex VX-231 analogue radios already in use were a little too large and awkward to carry to suit the needs of staff at the unit. Designed to be a solid all-purpose radio, the VX-231 is built to be sturdy and robust, which adds bulk to the chassis. And whilst it is by no means the largest handset out there, as an older model it has been overtaken by sleeker, more portable options.
We recommended the Foundation replace the fleet with the newer digital Motorola SL4000 model. Resembling a pre-smartphone mobile, the SL4000 is extremely portable and lightweight, weighing in at just 153g. With a slender profile and short antenna, it can easily fit in a pocket as you would carry a phone, perfect for discreet use on the move.
Moreover, as a new generation digital two way radio, the size of the SL4000 in no way compromises its performance. In fact, as well as the high quality audio and reliable coverage provided by digital radio technology, the SL4000 offers a greater range of additional features than weren’t even possible with analogue handsets. These include seamless data integration, so the SL4000 can be used to send texts and emails and even connect to mainline telephones and Bluetooth devices.
