We’ve now had a presence at the Clacton-on-Sea flying extravaganza every year since 2012 thanks to our partnership with GCS Alarms, who supply security equipment for the event.
The Clacton Airshow, now in its 26th year, is a major draw on the Thursday and Friday heading into August Bank Holiday weekend. Clacton’s famous seafront is transformed as tens of thousands of visitors gather to watch the breathtaking and daring aerobatic displays and fly pasts.
This year’s show featured daredevil shows from the RAF’s iconic Red Arrows, plus the likes of the Twister Aerobatic Team, the FireFlies and the Tigers Parachute Display Team. There were also fly pasts of historic aircraft such as MiG-15 fighter jets, Hawker Hurricane Mk IIB bombers and P-51D Mustangs.
As always with an event the size of the Clacton Airshow, spectator safety is of paramount importance, and all the more so given the daring nature of the entertainment. Reliable radio coverage along the whole length of Clacton seafront was an absolute must to help with logistics and coordination of the two-day event, as well as provide a critical communication link for safety and security operations.
It wasn’t just the pilots and their aircraft which were heading upwards – we had our own plans for using height to our advantage.
In order to extend network coverage along the length of the seafront, we provided two Motorola DR3000 Repeaters. They were set up with antennas mounted on pump-up telescopic masts, raising the antennas high into the air to maximise signal coverage for all radio users.
For handsets, GCS Alarms hired a fleet of Motorola CP040 analogue radios. Although we no longer sell CP040 handsets, they remain a reliable and popular part of our hire fleet, offering simplicity for one-off users combined with excellent audio clarity and reliability. The current equivalent in the Motorola range is the DP1400, which offers extended battery life, advanced noise cancelling features and private calling mode.
Along with the handsets, we supplied a range of headwear to compliment them – Two Wire Acoustic Tube earpieces, D Shape earpieces and lightweight headsets. As anyone who has ever been to an airshow will tell you, aircraft are extremely noisy contraptions, especially when buzzing down low to wow the crowds. The earpieces and headsets were therefore important to ensure staff working at the event could hear communications above the noise at all times.
