Just down the A12 from our base in Brentwood, Colchester lays claim to being the oldest town in Britain. It was already an important tribal capital when the Romans arrived, who called it Camulodunum – named after a local Celtic god, Camulos.
That ancient history is kept alive today in many place names in and around the town, including that of a local primary school – the Camulos Academy. Part of the nationwide REACH2 multi-academy trust, Camulos was opened in its current form in 2016 and provides an education to more than 250 pupils aged four to 11. It was rated as a ‘Good’ school in its latest OFSTED report.
We took a call from the leadership team at the school making an enquiry about two way radios. They had never used any form of wireless communications on site before, but were interested to know what difference a two way radio system could make, particularly with regards to health and safety.
In short, they wanted to know if we could provide a solution that was simple and straightforward enough for all staff (including teachers, administrators and facilities managers) to pick up with minimal training, that would provide reliable communication across all school buildings and grounds, and therefore help to coordinate things like first aid and fire evacuation drills.
Simplicity and versatility
Having considered the school’s needs and the site, our recommendation was a fleet of Lugra Evoke analogue handsets. Designed with simplicity and versatility in mind, Lugra Evoke radios represent excellent value for money, offering reliable performance at an entry-level price point.
After we sent over some handsets as a trial, management at Camulos Academy said staff liked the design of the Evoke because they are lightweight, easy to carry and easy to operate in one hand. The Evoke strips back two way radio functionality to its traditional basics – a push-to-talk button providing one-touch calling and answering, a volume control and a channel select/bandwidth scan switch. It therefore provides convenient out-of-the-box operability even for people not especially familiar with two way radios.
Like all primary schools, Camulos Academy is a relatively compact site, which meant we were able to confidently recommend an analogue solution without any fears over signal range. This is helped by the fact that the Evoke offers excellent audio quality for its price point, minimising interference and audio drop out at the limits of the coverage area.
