Cardinal Place is a major retail and office development in a prime location on Victoria Street, opposite Westminster Cathedral and just down the road from Victoria Station. Comprising three separate 11 storey buildings, the entire complex covers a mammoth one million sq ft. The futuristic glass structure was built at a cost of £200 million and is now a premier shopping development close to some of the capital’s most popular tourist destinations.
Given the size of Cardinal Place, operators faced a battle setting up a reliable mobile communications system to support security, maintenance teams and the management of health and safety protocols, including fire evacuation. After deciding that an existing analogue two way radio set up was no longer fit for purpose, they approached Brentwood.
To overcome the challenge of size, we installed a series of high performance Motorola SLR8000 digital repeater units to extend signal, supported by a distributed antenna system. Each repeater was used as the cornerstone of a network in each of the three buildings, and then we integrated these using Motorola IP Site Connect software run on a Motorola DM4600 Desk Base – creating one giant network out of three separate ones.
For the two way radio handsets, we recommended two digital models – the Motorola DP2400e and, for supervisors and coordinators, the top spec, full screen DP4800e. These were all programmed with private and group calling options, emergency alert and monitoring features and, on the DP4800e’s, call recording.
