The first station to be commissioned as part of the £14.8bn Crossrail project, Crossrail Paddington will act as a key hub connecting existing mainline and Underground rail services with the brand new high speed network. A joint development undertaken by Skanska and Costain, Crossrail Paddington is the most westerly of the new development’s subsurface stations and is being built just metres from Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s 150-year-old original Paddington station.
With a long history supplying Skanska with two way radio systems for major construction projects, Brentwood was once again asked to design a solution to support works coordination and health and safety management for the site teams. The main challenge was to ensure reliable communication could be maintained between contractors operating above and below ground.
We recommended the Motorola DP2400e digital handset, a rugged, reliable two way radio designed for use in tough environments. An IP67 protection rating for water and dust ingress made it an ideal choice for the variable conditions of an underground construction site, while intelligent audio and advanced noise cancellation ensure messages come through loud and clear even in close proximity to heavy machinery.
Because of the scale of the site, we installed a total of five Motorola SLR5500 repeater units plus a distributed antenna system (DAS) to maximise signal coverage.
