This year, the event took place on 19th and 20th March, and featured stalls from big brands like CEX and Forbidden Planet, as well as appearances from Lindsay Wagner (The Bionic Woman) and Robert Llewellyn (Red Dwarf).
Each year MCM Expo, the organisers of Comic Con, hire communication equipment from Brentwood Communications. For the Birmingham event, we recommended a particular two way radio for the job.
Motorola Two Way Radios
The NEC is a vast exhibition centre, covering a site that’s more than 2.5 square kilometres in size. Comic Con attendees will use all of the 29,000 car parking spaces, and flock through 20 halls packed with people.
The organisers of Comic Con needed radios that can be used before the event, for the set-up and preparation, and then throughout the weekend itself. They also need to keep in touch during the final day of clear-up tasks over a 3km range.
We recommended the Motorola DP2400 radio, which is a digital, licensed two way radio. This unit offers voice operated calling, crystal clear audio clarity, and the ability to speak one-to-one or in groups. The radio also senses the ambient noise in the venue, and then adjusts its speaker to compensate. It’s ideal for noisy venues, like the NEC, where the amount of people will rise and fall through a typical day.
Comic Con’s organisers will be under pressure to deliver constant support to all stallholders, celebrities, stores and attendees over a hectic weekend schedule. The Motorola DP2400 comes with a long-life battery that lasts 12 hours on a single charge, but when events span long days, and radios are put under heavy usage, a contingency plan is a good idea.
As such, the Comic Con organisers have also hired spare batteries for the Motorola DP2400s, so teams can instantly swap out their used batteries for fresh ones if they run out of charge.
