Merchant Taylors’ School is an independent fee paying school located in Northwood, Middlesex. Known as one of the ‘Great Nine’ boys’ school in England alongside the likes of Eton, Harrow, Rugby and Westminster, it was founded in 1561.
With 900 students and just under 100 teaching staff, the school is set in a beautiful 285 acre estate to the north west of London. The grounds include 100 acres of sports fields, woodland, lakes and a large complex of school buildings, centred around a magnificent 1930s art deco structure.
With the highest standards expected in every aspect of school life, running such an impressive site requires lots of hard work and dedication, in addition to teaching staff, the school also employs a large team of administrators, groundskeepers, catering staff, maintenance workers and porters.
The main concern of the school’s senior leadership team was, for safety and coordination reasons, to ensure everybody could remain in contact wherever they were across the site. So they contacted Brentwood to ask if it was possible to devise a two way radio fleet which would provide faultless reliability and help upgrade safety protocols.
We recommended building the network around a Motorola DM46000e Digital Base Station. We set this up as a primary control station in the school offices.
The base station offered more than enough channels for the 30-plus handsets the school requested, as well as providing the option of acting as a dispatcher for coordinating communications. It also features Bluetooth and WiFi integration, should the school wish to link the network to other communications systems.
To boost signal coverage, we also provided a Motorola SLR5500 Repeater complete with an antenna system.
To boost signal coverage, we also provided a Motorola Repeater complete with an antenna system.
For the majority of staff, we supplied 30 Motorola DP2400e Digital Radios. These compact, robust two way radios were intended to act as the workhorses of the network, to be used by maintenance, catering and various office staff, including the headmaster, bursar and IT department. We programmed each handset with a unique ID so staff could make use of the private calling features.
Motorola DP2400e radios offer exceptional audio clarity and include advanced digital noise cancelling features. Water resistant and with an extended battery life of up to 28 hours, they are perfect for mobile working indoors and out. For all users who could find themselves working alone in potentially hazardous situations, we also programmed the Lone Worker feature, requiring them to check back in with the base station at regular intervals.
Finally, we also provided Motorola DP4401e Digital Radios for the grounds staff. The Motorola DP4401e is a best in class digital two way radio model with a full range of advanced functions and safety features. For grounds workers who would be required to work right across the large site, we recommended these for their premium reliability and for their support for GPS location tracking. We also programmed the Man Down safety feature, meaning if an accident did occur away from the main school buildings, an alarm would automatically be raised and the location could be identified from the base station.
