Waste management specialist Biffa has opened a brand new collection and disposal depot in Wigan serving the north west of England.
The company offers a wide range of services, from general waste collection to mixed recycling to hazardous waste disposal, to commercial and public sector clients all over the UK. The Wigan facility serves the Greater Manchester region and adds to existing depots in Liverpool, Manchester, St Helens and Preston.
Brentwood has worked with Biffa at numerous other sites, supplying two way radios to support health and safety coordination and general works management. So we were delighted when the company got in touch with us again and asked if we could kit out its new Wigan depot.
Safety is a high priority at all waste management facilities. The coming and going of collection vehicles coupled large-scale industrial machinery and dozens of staff on foot makes the accident risk high, so on-site communications have to be spot on to keep everyone safe.
Digital reliability
Drawing on our experience of supplying two way radio for waste depots in the past, we recommended Biffa take a fleet of digital handsets. The superior audio clarity digital handsets provide is an important factor in environments where there is lots of noise from machinery to contend with, and digital radios also offer better signal coverage and longer battery life.
The model we agreed on for use around the depot was the Motorola DP1400. The DP1400 is a highly dependable all-rounder, a robust non-display model ideal for use in industrial environments. As well as digital noise cancellation and automatic volume control, other features include the option of private calling, hands-free voice activation (VOX) and safety protocols including a one-touch Emergency Button and Lone Worker remote monitoring.
All of this has been supplied on a Simple UK Ofcom licence, giving Biffa the freedom to use all of the radios anywhere in the UK.
