The old Midland Bank HQ on the corner of Poultry Street and Princes Street has re-opened as the five-star NED Hotel. The stately 310,000 sq ft Grade I listed building has been refitted with 252 bedrooms, nine restaurants, a spa, a gym and a rooftop pool with panoramic views over London.
But the piece de resistance for Bond fans is the former bank vaults, which have been turned into a subterranean bar. The vault was used to shoot the Fort Knox scenes in Goldfinger, with the iconic vault door featuring prominently in the film.
Due to the size of the hotel, management decided to install a secure two way radio network. They wanted all departments to be able to communicate seamlessly at all times so they could always provide five-star service to guests, and in particular wanted their security, maintenance, front of house and concierge teams equipped with radios.
They turned to Brentwood to supply the solution.
Because of the size of the hotel, our first step was to plan how to provide five-star coverage throughout. We came up with two solutions, supplying Motorola SLR5500 repeaters to boost transmission and reception signals directly, but we also installed the Motorola IP Site Connect system as well. Through IP Site Connect, we can connect multiple repeaters and therefore provide full coverage throughout the hotel.
For handsets, we supplied Motorola DP4400e digital radios and for fixed base stations we provided Motorola DM4600e complete with display, both from Motorola’s cutting edge E-series range.
Both offer outstanding audio quality using Motorola’s very latest intelligent audio and advanced noise cancelling technologies, ensuring crystal clear communications at all times. They both support private and group calling so messages can be targeted more effectively, and importantly they both have integrated WiFi, which means they can be configured to work over the air waves in the IP Connect system.
We also programmed the handsets with a few special functions to support the hotel’s needs. The DM4600e’s, which are display models, were programmed with Caller ID, so users can always see who is contacting them.
On all units, we also set up a one-touch Emergency Button as an extra security feature, so staff could raise an alarm quickly and easily if the need ever arose. And in a similar vein, we programmed the radios with PTT Interrupt, which, in an emergency, will allow a user to override all live calls to get their message heard.
