Brentwood recently completed a two way radio system upgrade at a major recycling plant in Ipswich.
The Masons Recycling Facility is operated by Viridor, one of the UK’s largest waste management, recycling and energy recovery contractors. The company serves more than 32,000 public sector and commercial clients nationwide, operating a network of 300-plus recycling plants and other facilities.
The Masons plant was earlier in 2019 earmarked for a major £15.4 million upgrade carried out in partnership with Suffolk County Council. Two way radios have been used to handle on-site communications for many years, but the existing fleet was running on obsolete technology and handsets were in a considerable state of disrepair.
Management decided it was time to invest in a more modern and robust solution, and turned to Brentwood for help.
Digital upgrade
We supplied two types of digital two way radio, Motorola DP1400 digital handsets and a Motorola DM4400e vehicle mounted radio. The DP1400 is a high quality standard model which in recent years has become highly popular in industrial settings for its reliability and durability. An excellent all-rounder, it offers straightforward operation combined with digitally-enhanced functionality such as background noise reduction, hands-free VOX activation and private calling.
As Viridor wanted visiting third-party contractors to be able to communicate on the network whilst on site, we supplied spare handsets that could be loaned out when required. As health and safety is a core operational priority, we programmed all DP1400 units with Emergency Calling network override and Lone Worker monitoring, which requires staff operating in hazardous areas to check back in with colleagues at fixed intervals.
The DM4400e is a feature-rich high-performance digital vehicle radio which is ideal for keeping lines of communication open between drivers, vehicle operators and other members of staff as they move around the plant. The DM4400e has a much larger coverage area than handheld two way radios so is able to communicate with other users even as a vehicle moves across large areas.
We installed the DM4400e into the BOMAG Compactor used on site to crush up waste, neatly fitting the radio unit into the cab with the fist mic docked on a side panel for ease of access.
