The likes of former England internationals Michael Owen, Joe Cole and Jamie Redknapp squared off against World Cup winners Robert Pires and Robertos Carlos, with an all-star supporting cast that included Olympic champions Usain Bolt and Sir Mo Farah, and TV celebrities such as Joe Wicks, Ben Sheppard and Piers Morgan.
The Soccer Aid charity match, screened live on ITV, was raising funds for UNICEF’s Defending Play campaign – a major initiative aimed at ensuring more children around the world can grow up happy, healthy and able to play.
Brentwood was approached to supply two way radios to event organisers to help coordination of the action-packed night. They wanted a wireless communications solution to keep staff in touch throughout preparation and during the event itself, to ensure everything kept running smoothly and safely.
Supporting a great cause
We hired out a set of Motorola CP040 analogue two way radios. The CP040 is the predecessor to the current Motorola DP1400 and shares very similar features and performance qualities. We continue to keep a fleet of CP040 handsets for event hire as they meet the requirements most organisers are looking for from two way radios – reliable, easy to use and affordable.
As always, we were very proud to be asked to be involved in such a high-profile event for such a good cause. As a charity event, one of the priorities was being able to keep costs down to maximise the amount that could be channelled into the Defending Play initiative. We therefore hired out the two way radios on our own hire frequency license, avoiding the need for organisers to pay for a temporary license of their own.
After the event, it was very pleasing to get a direct thank you from UNICEF for the role we played. April Williams, the charity’s Special Event Coordinator, said:
“I wanted to just say a HUGE thank you to everyone at Brentwood for supporting the Soccer Aid for Unicef Gala. The event far exceeded our expectations and raised an incredible £425,000 on the night. Thanks to UK Aid, this will be matched by the UK government meaning that our total for the evening will be around £850,000 which is incredible.
“We wouldn’t have been able to run the event without using the radios so we are incredibly grateful to you supplying them to us. Thank you again for your continued support of UNICEF.”
