The event, which drew a bumper 3000 entrants, was all set to go when the need for a comms supplier cropped up at the last minute.
We were asked if we could help with two way radios for stewards and race officials to coordinate safety and security for competitors and spectators, as well as provide general communications during set-up and throughout the event.
We were happy to do so, but with just a few days to go, it was a race against time for our engineers to assess the course and come up with a workable solution.
The 13.1 mile course heads from the centre of Ipswich, out along the scenic Shotley Peninsular, and back again into the town. Initially, we recommended powerful Motorola DP2400 and DP3600 digital handsets from our hire fleet, combined with a repeater and antenna system to extend the coverage range.
However, although this was more than adequate to cover the route through the town, it was only in testing that our engineers found it wasn’t quite sufficient to reach furthest rural extremities of the course 5 miles out on the peninsular.
Quick thinking was needed, and luckily our team is well used to thinking on their feet to find a solution.
The answer they came up with was the Lugra L300 – a push-to-talk cellular device which looks like a rugged Android smart phone but operates like a two way radio. Because it works on a mobile network, the Lugra L300 has no restrictions on signal range, meaning it could be used by race stewards way out of town.
So in effect, we supplied two networks – the DP2400 and DP3600 digital two way radios for the in-town operation, and the Lugra L300s for out of town. This actually worked out well. Because most of the spectators were in the town for the beginning and end of the race, this was where safety and security operations were focused. The Motorola digital radios are well suited to this kind of work, offering outstanding reliability and clear audio to ensure critical communications get through.
The Lugra devices, on the other hand, were used by race stewards. The limitless range was very useful to keep stewards in touch all across the course. Plus, the L300s had GPS tracking enabled, so everyone’s location could be identified at all times.
