Run by British Cycling and Team Sky – where superstar cyclists like Chris Froome, Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish have made their names – the idea behind the Sky Ride events is to encourage family and friends to take to their wheels in their local towns and cities in a fun-filled, traffic free environment.
Local councils play a big role in the organisation on the ground, especially coordinating road closures, diversions and the marshalling of routes for participants. Having worked with us on a number of other events, including this year’s Waterfront Celebrations, we were delighted that Ipswich Borough Council again chose Brentwood as their key communications partner to provide two way radio technology for the Sky Ride.
With so many cyclists congregating in the town in one day, the council’s primary concern was the safety and security of everyone involved. With hundreds of people moving quickly over a large area, the council’s safety team would by necessity have to be spread out across the town throughout the day.
The number of roles required was large, including traffic managers ensuring the route stayed free from motor vehicles, marshals directing cyclists round the course, first aiders and people manning refreshment stands. Many of the organising staff would be mobile throughout the event, some joining in with the cycling. Ensuring everyone could stay in contact was a priority.
The council also wanted public address capabilities, to ensure that the large crowds of fast-moving cyclists could hear any important announcements that needed to be made throughout the day.
The solution we put together for the event involved supplying top-of-the-range Motorola DP2400 two way handheld radios together, with D-shape ear pieces, and Motorola DM4600 vehicle radios. This was supplemented by radio repeaters to boost signal for all the equipment involved.
Portable, durable and with long battery life, the DP2400 is the high spec solution for large events, combining reliability with useful functions such as private call, so individuals can contact each other without having to broadcast to the whole group. D shape earpieces are ideal for events where organisers are on the move, they are discrete, stay out of the way and maintain call clarity even in noisy environments.
We supplied the DM4600 vehicle mobiles to address two of the council’s key needs for the event – to have mobile control centres capable of moving rapidly across the town coordinating the event, and to have a public address system. This adaptable vehicle radio can broadcast to up to 15 different sites at once over long distances, and is capable of intersecting into another conversation such as when urgent alerts need to be put out.
At Brentwood, we understand fully how to get the most out of two way radio technology to allow for communication on the move at big events. Give our team a call on 01245 403520 to discuss your needs.
