Adding a Little Colour to Frontline NHS Services

Brentwood has long had the pleasure of supplying two way radios to numerous NHS trusts, hospitals and clinics, and we will continue to offer our expertise and service as diligently as we can to help frontline medical teams coordinate their efforts at this most difficult of times.

Recently, we were contacted by an existing customer of ours, the Newham Centre for Medical Health, asking if we could help them with a problem. The busy inpatient facility, which is based on the site of Newham University Hospital in East London, runs a fleet of Motorola DP1400 digital handsets supplied by us.

While the two way radios themselves have been working just fine for the centre, management told us they were regularly running into what boiled down to a logistical problem. The unit operates several different departments, each of which require radios for different purposes at various times.

Everything in the right place

Although the centre felt it had plenty of radios for its needs, it was finding it difficult to keep track of who had the handsets and where they were being taken. In a busy 24/7 environment, staff would understandably just grab whatever device was at hand when they needed to contact a colleague quickly. This was leading to handsets moving around between departments unchecked and frequently being misplaced.

The key issue with this was then that staff would not be able to find a radio when they needed one. In emergency situations, this could seriously hamper the ability of teams to respond quickly and efficiently.

Our solution was to suggest the Newham Centre for Medical Health add a little colour to their two way radio fleet. Motorola DP1400 handsets are by default black and it is next to impossible to distinguish one from another. But ther is  the option of coloured housings.

We ended up supplying the centre with six different housings – red, orange, yellow, green, blue and pink – so a different coloured radio could be allocated to each department. That way, everyone would know where each radio belonged, and make sure each team had access to a handset when they needed it most.

It is a small little difference, but in these most challenging times for our NHS frontline workers, every bit helps.
