Part of a new wave of innovation in wireless business communications, the ICOM IP501H is a push-to-talk handheld device that operates over 3G and 4G LTE mobile networks. Based on the design and functionality of a classic two-way radio handset, the fact that the IP501H operates over mobile networks means it overcomes the geographical limitations of using radio frequencies.
This combination of the best aspects of mobile and two way radio technology is a major breakthrough for commercial and industrial communications solutions. Making use of existing mobile phone infrastructure, the IP501H can be used in any location and provides nationwide coverage. No licenses are needed and no ancillary equipment such as repeater units have to be deployed to increase the viable network area, reducing costs.
At the same time, the IP501H delivers all the features that have made two way radio a staple of business communications for decades. It is a compact handset, with dimensions of 59 × 95 × 32mm meaning it is unobtrusive to carry and easy to operate in one hand. It features the familiar push-to-talk (PTT) button to transmit calls, with options to switch between all, group and individual broadcast modes providing flexibility and efficiency in how conversations are managed across large works teams.
One of the benefits brought by the integration of mobile technology is that the IP501H is fully duplex, which means you can talk and listen on the same handset at the same time – no waiting for another person to stop speaking before pressing the PTT button, making for a more natural conversation flow. It also means that multiple users in any given call group can initiate calls at the same time, without having to wait for channels to become available.
As a safety feature, the IP501H also has a priority interrupt feature, which allows users to ‘break in’ to ongoing conversations on the network in an emergency when a critical message needs to be broadcast. It also comes with Lone Worker monitoring and Man Down alerts as standard.
One of the reasons why industry has been reluctant to adopt mobile phones as standard communication tools is concern over audio quality. The ICOM IP501H addresses this using cutting edge vocoder technology, delivering high quality, clear audio in all circumstances. It is also a handset designed for use in tough environments indoors and out. It is waterproof even when fully submerged to a depth of 1 metre and carries the IP67 rating for dust protection.
