The Lakeside (Energy from Waste) facility in Colnbrook is a joint venture between waste management companies Viridor and Grundon. The Berkshire plant recovers energy from 410,000 tonnes of residual waste every year. Processing this waste generates 37MW of electricity – most of which is fed into the National Grid.
After hearing about our industrial expertise, Viridor turned to Brentwood Communications to install a reliable, cutting-edge, two way radio system. The company wanted us to supply its ‘Facilities’ and ‘Security’ personnel with the latest handheld radios to increase worker efficiency and elevate health and safety. As well as being easy to use, these advanced radios would need to withstand the harsh environment, and also keep going for prolonged periods.

During a free site survey, our skilled engineers concluded that Motorola’s digital radios DP3400 and DP3600 would meet the brief. By supercharging the signals using a Motorola DR3000 Repeater and strategically-placed antennas; we are able to guarantee back-to-back radio coverage across the whole site.
These robust radios have intelligent audio, which self-adjusts the volume to prevent users from missing incoming calls in noisy areas. Also the suppression filters dampen any background clamour when staff need to make calls. The radios’ increased functionality means managers can opt to talk to selected workers, or communicate with the whole group.
Employees feel relaxed about working extended shifts knowing the batteries in their digital radios last 40% longer between charges. If any worker is in danger, they can simply press their Emergency button to alert team members at a stroke. Also, the ‘Man Down’ and ‘Lone Worker’ safety features allow Central Control to monitor the well being of vulnerable staff at all times.
This latest radio technology from Brentwood enables the Facilities and Security workers to liaise and collaborate with each other seamlessly, which helps this robust project to run more efficiently, effectively and safely.
