Icom IC-F4400DS UHF Digital Two-Way Radio

The IC-F4400DS is part of Icom‘s latest generation of IDAS digital business radios. Like the rest of the IDAS radio series, it boasts the smart looks and advanced functionality that the Icom brand is known for, along with a compact, rugged build and user-friendly controls.

This digital two way radio features a high-resolution colour LCD display and partial keypad. Visibility is never an issue whether indoors or in natural lighting thanks to the trans-reflective screen, while a night mode setting allows for comfortable viewing even in low lighting conditions.

Weighing just 170 grams, this compact model is the result of Icom’s new engineering techniques including the use of a flat sheet keypad and a custom SoC (system-on-a-chip) manufacture. Efficient power consumption means that the unit also takes advantage of a thinner battery pack.

But small size is no barrier to resilience. The IC-F4400DS can handle rough conditions thanks to an IP68 dust-tight and waterproof protection rating. The exterior is water resistant enough that it can be placed in shallow water for up to an hour and still function. Whether dropped in a pool of water or simply exposed to heavy rain, any water can be easily drained from the two-way radio by using the vibrating AquaQuake draining function.

As a UHF radio, the IC-4400DS operates best for indoor environments such as large offices or factories, since the signal is capable of travelling through floors, walls, and other obstructions. Active noise cancellation further helps to keep audio clear even in loud environments, while an audio equalizer allows you to tailor the audio tone to suit speech characteristics

For police, guards and other roles where safety and security is of utmost importance, the IC-F4400DS has plenty of key features. It comes with basic 4-key DES encryption as standard, or it can be used with the optional UT-134 encryption unit upgradable to 256-bit AES encryption for advanced digital communication security. A stun/ revive/ kill feature can help lock down the radio remotely in case it is lost or stolen, and service can be easily restored once found.

This model also supports digital voice recording for incoming and outgoing communications, plus playback. With a 32 GB microSD card, a maximum of 500 hours can be recorded.

Other safety features include an emergency button and five additional emergency-related functions (man down, motion detection, stationary detection, lone worker and power OFF). The built-in GPS receiver logs user position data at regular intervals and can be saved to a microSD card. The radios can show direction and distance to another radio or specified point and can notify you with a beep sound if the target is in the specified range.

Bluetooth provides remote operation and hands-free communication when paired with a third-party headset and earpieces, and allows for wireless transfer of data or files. Over-the-Air-Programming function allows remote change of programming data over the radio channel and eliminates the need to program handsets individually. Alternatively, radios can be connected to a PC through a USB port for programming and accessing the installed microSD card in mass storage mode.
